Timothy Leadership Series, Part 1
The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. - 1 Timothy 1:5 (NLT)
There are several topics, ideas, and angles to approach the concept of leadership. Christian leaders have spent hours delving into the Word of God for inspiration and guidance to be the men and women God has called them to be. The Bible teaches us the importance of humility, servant leadership, caring for others, and dignity. You can spend a lifetime studying the life of Christ and take away many timeless leadership qualities. Without a doubt, Scripture is clear; you cannot lead well if you do not prioritize loving others well. Jesus tells us that his disciples will be known by their love for one another (John 13:35). The Apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of love with his message that without love, we are nothing; without love, we gain nothing (1 Corinthians 13). Christian leadership prioritizes love. In this leadership series, we will be taking some time to reflect on the leadership insights Paul bestowed upon his mentee, one he considered his own spiritual son, a young minister named Timothy. We’ll discover the importance of integrity, setting an example for others, and the value of pursuing godliness. We will be built up with confidence through the Word of God and the mission the Lord has called us to.
Jesus’ example of leadership was in stark contrast to the worldly leadership of his time. Other rulers, he describes, sought to reign and lord over their people, pursuing fame, fortune, power, and authority. However, Jesus’ emphasis on serving others in genuine love was the primary concept that he not only taught but exemplified to his followers. Paul desired to keep this main concept of doing everything out of love for others as a primary quality of leadership to build upon. Three qualities of this love he emphasized were a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.
I appreciate these qualities because they help us see the importance and impact of how we view and treat others. They bring a well-rounded, expanded view of what we would typically recognize as integrity. The descriptive words—pure, clear, genuine—challenge us to faithfully remain in Christ and do all things to the glory of God. When you lead from this space, you can see how it can increase your care for others, help you be honest toward your calling, and build your trust in the Lord for wisdom and guidance. One who leads this way can greatly influence how they gain respect. Trust, respect, honor, teamwork, culture, all of these are impacted by how leaders love and care for those God has entrusted to them.
These qualities are best developed through the mindset/attitude of Christ—humility. Humility in leadership helps one to acknowledge the truth and respond appropriately, rest in God’s mercy, and fight the good fight. It helps one lead from a space of honesty (with self & others), which builds trust and inner confidence. Humility gives clarity to the mission, which prepares one for the battle. Paul had this in mind as he continued his charge to Timothy by saying, “This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience.” (1 Timothy 1:18-19 ESV) Note what Timothy is charged to carry as his weapons for leadership—faith & a good conscience. Carry these, and the Lord will lead and guide you every step of the way.
May the Lord be with your spirit. And may his grace be with all of you. - 2 Timothy 4:22 (NLT)
