The 2-Year Milestone in Addiction Recovery

Addiction is a complex issue that touches every aspect of an individual’s life. It often develops over years, causing isolation, serious health challenges, financial burdens, and hopelessness. It is all too easy for a struggling individual to get stuck in the vicious trap of substance abuse, chronic mental health issues, and homelessness, with each element exacerbating the others. On average, a person will spend over 15 years in regular drug or alcohol abuse before reaching out for help. Many spend decades living in addiction, not knowing if there is any way out at all.

For a deeply rooted problem like this, there is no quick fix. However, there is hope for true, lasting recovery. Recovering from long-term issues requires long-term support.

The road to recovery is not a perfectly straight line. Unfortunately, relapses can be part of the journey for many individuals seeking freedom from substance abuse. However, research shows that the longer someone remains in sobriety, the lower their risk of relapse becomes.

One milestone stands out: two years of continuous sobriety

At that point, the probability of remaining sober for life rises to around 60%.

Studies show that chances of long-term success are even higher for individuals with high recovery capital. Recovery capital refers to an individual’s internal and external resources that can be used to initiate or sustain their recovery process. This includes resources that meet basic physical needs, such as food and shelter, which provide the safety and stability needed to begin the healing journey. Recovery capital also includes the support systems that help someone follow through in their recovery, including community, counseling, education, and mental health care.

Extended time also allows for a smoother transition into independent, sober living. Without sustainable coping mechanisms, an individual returning to difficult circumstances can easily slip back into old habits. Beyond learning to live without relying on a substance, two years of support provides individuals with time to begin rebuilding their life and reclaiming what addiction took from them. When those in recovery have the opportunity to slow down and heal, they can receive the support they need to find and maintain jobs, save money, rebuild relationships, and work toward meeting their personal goals. Most importantly, they can find lasting hope, knowing that there is a way forward into a life of freedom.

Due to the pressing need for long-term support in recovery, Jericho Road Ministries now offers a 25-month residential recovery program! Our faith-based program includes case management, job training, financial readiness classes, counseling, and spiritual support. By the time an individual reaches 2 years with us, they should have all the tools and support they need to take their next steps in independent, sober living.
